Beaches

Colonsay's beaches have been named as some of the best in the world, and certainly in Europe, and we are sure you will not be disappointed.

The following beaches are voted our favourites but there are endless dreamy coves and shallow bays for you to discover for yourself.

Kiloran, Balnahard, Machrins, Cable Bay, Garvard, Oransay, South East corner.

The beaches have completely different characters and different attractions.. seabirds and seals .. rockpools and shells.. an unbroken Atlantic horizon to the West or the distant coastlines of Jura and Islay to the East. For those prepared to take the plunge, the water everwhere is crystal clear, smooth as silk and at most times of the year icily invigorating.

Balnahard Bay

The stunning bay on the north east corner of Colonsay which is reached on foot or cycle from Kiloran Bay. It is a beautiful 45 min walk or 20 min cycle along a track which becomes rolling machair for the last 200m.

With views towards Mull, Scarba and Jura and a long sandy beach, this is a perfect spot to take a picnic for the day. From here you can also walk to the northern most tip of Colonsay and see the huge natural stone arch.

Kiloran Bay

The longest beach on Colonsay and one of the only beaches with surf. Great for body boarding, long walks and beach cricket!

The beach is easily accessible from the road so it is a good choice for those with small children. It has a stream running into a natural lagoon at the southern end of the beach which is perfect for paddling and making dams.
