COTTAGE DETAILS

Set amid wide fields and hills with the bay shimmering beyond, Machrins offers peace, space, and freedom to escape into the beauty of the island.

Set on Colonsay’s west side, this large Victorian farmhouse lies close to beautiful Machrins Bay, the golf course and the site of a Viking settlement. Beside a working farm barn with cows and sheep often grazing nearby, the house enjoys expansive views over fields, hills and Machrins Bay. With plenty of space and well appointed bedrooms, it is perfect for families or groups of friends seeking a comfortable island retreat. This imposing and beautiful old house retains many original features, including sash windows with shutters and other authentic fittings. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, and the house is furnished and decorated to a high standard throughout, with high quality Egyptian cotton bed linen provided.

A large stone-walled entrance porch provides space for coats and boots, with seating for putting on your walking shoes. Just off the entryway is a ground floor bedroom with a four-poster bed, high ceiling and Velux window overlooking the hills, fields and sea, with an ensuite walk-in shower. Also off the hallway is a laundry room with washing facilities and a bathroom with walk-in shower. The entryway leads to a large farmhouse kitchen with stone floor, Rayburn stove (which also boosts the hot water), and a large dining table. The kitchen windows overlook the garden, trees and surrounding hills, and there is a walk-in pantry along with a tall fridge freezer and additional freezer. Leading from the kitchen is a twin bedroom with shuttered windows overlooking the lawn, fields and hills.

A hallway lined with a large bookcase – your own library - leads towards the staircase and a small nook with table and chairs overlooking the garden and hills. It’s a space to enjoy your morning coffee, eat breakfast or read while watching the sun rise over rolling fields and distant hills. Next to this is a spacious living area with an open fire and views across fields to the sea. Towards the rear of the house there is a large dining room with a grand dining table, ideal for sociable meals, with shuttered windows looking out across the fields, hills and sea.

Upstairs there are two double bedrooms and one twin bedroom. There is also a useful storage area with a Velux window looking towards the sea, leading through to a bathroom with a heated towel rail and large freestanding bath. A second bathroom on this floor has unique decorative tiling in a ship design and a bath with handheld shower. The attic level has two twin bedrooms. Please note there is a low rail at the top of the stairs, so care should be taken with young children. All bedrooms enjoy views of the garden, surrounding hills, open pastureland or the sea.

Outside, the enclosed garden is laid to lawn with mature trees, and there is also a double kennel with a covered sleeping area. The farmhouse stands near the site of an early Norse settlement at Machrins, where traces of Viking dwellings speak to the island’s ancient past. The house is ideally located within easy reach of the golf course, hotel, shop and harbour, and is perfectly situated for long beach days at beautiful Machrins Bay.

7 night minimum. Shorter breaks may be available outside the peak season - please email us to find out more.
