COTTAGE DETAILS

With sea views from almost every room, this wonderfully scenic and spacious island retreat is surrounded by big skies, open countryside and ever-changing seascapes.

Baleromindubh Farmhouse sits on the east side of Colonsay, set beside a working farm barn within open pastureland on a peninsula between Whistlers Bay and Queens Bay. Reached by a mile-long winding, rough track — best suited to 4x4 vehicles or those with high ground clearance — the approach opens out to wide sea views across to Mull, Jura and Islay. This large traditional Victorian farmhouse is the only cottage in our portfolio that can boast such wide and sweeping sea views.

The house is entered via two practical porches, one at the front and one at the rear, ideal for leaving boots and outdoor gear after a day exploring beaches and hills. The living area is a welcoming and comfortable space, with a multi-fuel stove and generous sofa seating arranged for relaxed evenings by the fire. The large kitchen forms the heart of the house. Light and airy, with sea views on two sides, it looks out towards Mull, Jura and Islay, and a large dining table provides plenty of space for shared meals. A small pantry area offers additional storage. On the ground floor there is an en suite double bedroom with sea views, and a twin bedroom. A separate bathroom with walk-in shower also incorporates a utility area with washing machine and tumble dryer.

A wide staircase between the sitting room and kitchen leads upstairs. Straight ahead is a light and airy twin bedroom with a Velux skylight offering views towards the mountains of Mull, the sea and the coastline towards Scalasaig. To the right, via a railed landing (care may be needed with young children), are a further twin bedroom with built-in storage and a double bedroom, both looking out to the garden, open pastureland and across the sea towards Jura's mountains. Between these rooms is a family bathroom, wood-panelled in coastal blue, with bath and shower over, heated towel rail and views towards Jura.

Inside, tasteful, traditional touches throughout — including vintage furniture and wood-panelled doors — give the farmhouse warmth and character while retaining a relaxed feel. Accessibility-wise, there are a few steps down to the main entrance and a small step into the living area, with one twin bedroom and a double with en suite shower on the ground floor, making the accommodation accessible without using the stairs. Outside, the farmhouse has a large enclosed lawned garden bordered by a traditional dry-stone wall and dotted with mature trees, with tree swings making it a lovely space for children to play. To the rear is a further enclosed gravel garden area.

The location is ideal for wildlife and sea watching — bring binoculars for seabirds and passing boats. Whistlers Bay can be reached in approximately 10–15 minutes across open countryside (wellies recommended), leading to a beautiful sandy beach with wonderful views across to Jura and beyond.

7 night minimum. Shorter breaks may be available outside the peak season - please email us to find out more.
