COTTAGE DETAILS
Set among open heath and farmland on Colonsay’s eastern edge, Balerominmhor offers spectacular sea views and easy access to a quiet beach below.
Reached via a rough winding track across moor and heath, passing lochs, open farmland and the McPhee Monument, Balerominmhor sits in a secluded position at the end of a mile-long track (best suited to 4x4s or vehicles with high ground clearance). Step out of the car and breathe in the fresh sea air, with sweeping views across fields and sea towards the mountains of Jura.
The cottage is a traditional stone-built farmhouse. It was refurbished and extended in 2017, while retaining charming original features such as wood panelling and traditional light fittings. Inside, a bright porch with sea views leads into the house, with coat hooks and a utility room with washer dryer to one side. The entrance hallway opens into a large living room painted in fresh coastal blue, with three sofas gathered around a multi-fuel stove and beautiful views across the sea to Jura. A panelled window seat provides the perfect spot to read a book or simply watch the changing light on the water.
The spacious kitchen also enjoys sea and mountain views and features another window seat overlooking the garden. With a large dining table for sociable meals, the kitchen is well equipped with plenty of storage, a fridge freezer and an additional tall fridge, while blue painted units continue the coastal theme. From the kitchen, a bright sun room opens onto the terrace through sliding doors, filling the space with afternoon sunlight and offering wonderful views across the garden and sea. Another large table makes this a lovely space for relaxed meals, conversation or simply enjoying the scenery. Also on the ground floor is a bathroom with bath and shower over, a double bedroom with en suite walk-in shower and views of the surrounding hillside, and a twin room with bunk beds and a wood-panelled ceiling.
Upstairs there is a wooden railing over the staircase (please note for small children). A large, bright room with three single beds and a Velux window looks out over the surrounding hills where sheep often graze. Across the landing are two further bedrooms with Velux windows framing views of the sea, open countryside and the mountains of Jura. One double bedroom has an en suite bathroom with bath and shower over, and there is also a characterful family bathroom set into the apex of the roof.
Outside, the house sits within an enclosed dry-stone walled garden. The lawn is brightened by daffodils in spring, and shells and beach pebbles line the path. A small stream runs just beyond the garden wall. Sit on the sunny terrace and enjoy views of sea and mountain while listening to the brook, waves, and the calls of seabirds and moorland birds—a perfect spot for birdwatching, reading, or simply soaking it all in. Following the stream and old farm track down the hill leads to a quiet beach where the stream meets the sea, seabirds gather and rock pools await exploration. Continue walking around the headland for 10 minutes or so, and you reach the beautiful and deserted Cable Bay, with its white sand and sweeping curved shoreline.
