COTTAGE DETAILS

Pigs Paradise offers a unique blend of historic character, comfort, and space, all within the peaceful setting of the Colonsay Estate.

Set within the historic grounds of Colonsay Estate, Pigs Paradise is rich in character and history, offering a wonderfully atmospheric retreat surrounded by the beauty of the Colonsay House gardens. The apartment is bright and airy, benefiting from a sunny southerly aspect.

Throughout the apartment, original period details have been carefully preserved and celebrated. From the old-fashioned high metal-framed beds and open tiled fireplaces in the bedrooms, to antique chairs, dressers, desks, wardrobes, shuttered windows, and original calling bell push-buttons, the space is filled with echoes of its past. There are charming personal touches too, including an antique letter-writing case with its many compartments, where you can still see where the inkwell once sat.

The apartment is ideal for group gatherings with three beautifully appointed bedrooms — two twins and one double — each enjoying peaceful views over the gardens. Wake to scenes of the stream gently meandering through ancient trees, shrubs, and lawn, offering a tranquil start to every day. After breakfast, perhaps enjoy a gentle walk through the gardens, take time to admire the famous rhododendron collection, and make your way to the tearoom at your own pace for a relaxed indulgence.

A corridor with rooftop views connects the bedrooms, before leading into the open-plan kitchen and living area. This inviting space is both stylish and comfortable, with two cosy sofas gathered around an open fire and TV, garden views, and a dining table for relaxed meals. A bookshelf invites you to curl up by the fire with a good book after a day exploring the island.

The kitchen is well equipped for self-catering, including a fridge freezer, microwave, and dishwasher, and offers everything needed to prepare leisurely breakfasts or evening suppers. The bathroom overlooks the garden and features a bath with shower over and a heated towel rail. Please note there is no washing machine or tumble dryer in the apartment, but guests are welcome to use the communal launderette located on the way up to the apartment entrance. Car parking is available a short walk from the apartment, in the garden and café car park.

The Estate’s extensive woodland gardens are open to guests at all times, offering the chance to step straight from your apartment into peaceful walks among the trees. From early April through to October, the Colonsay House gardens are open to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays (admission charge applies), with the garden café also open — so you can enjoy a coffee in scenic surroundings or take time to explore the historic gardens.

Pigs Paradise takes its name from a historic place on Colonsay — the Gaelic Aoineadh nan Muc — a fertile clifftop pasture where pigs were traditionally kept. The name reflects the island’s crofting heritage and rich landscape. Today, the area is loved by walkers and nature enthusiasts for its dramatic coastal scenery and seabird colonies. It can be found on OS maps under Aoineadh nan Muc or at grid reference NR 37279 97190.
