The Colonsay Hotel

Built in 1750 as an inn for the local population and the rare visitor, the exterior of The Colonsay hotel in Scotland has remained largely unchanged. Perched on the hillside above the harbour, the hotel has commanding views over the sea to the neighbouring island of Jura.

Inside, The Colonsay retains much of its original charm and is relaxed and comfortable. With open fires, painted floorboards and deep sofas in the bar, log room, conservatory or restaurant, there is always a perfect spot to relax in.

The restaurant is more gastro-pub than formal dining and uses local produce wherever possible.

We provide free WiFi throughout the downstairs rooms. We are dog friendly and allow one well-behaved dog in two of our bedrooms by prior arrangement for a small charge. We have bikes available to hire for our guests.

All room rates include a delicious full Colonsay breakfast.

This is also where you will find the Colonsay Holidays office where our friendly team will look after all your holiday needs!

"This cool, stylish hotel provides a luxurious nest and has a buzz of cheerfulness most of the day. Staff show a level of personal commitment unusual in a hotel these days. They treat you like a real person."
GOOD HOTEL GUIDE 2015

Our Rooms

We have two exceptional rooms, Ardskenish and Balnahard, which have great beds, fine Egyptian linen and contemporary styling, and one superior bedroom, Cable Bay, which can be made up as a King or twin. All have wonderful sea views.

Our remaining six bedrooms are all furnished simply but very comfortably. Some have great bathrooms, some have shower rooms. Pigs Paradise consists of a double bedroom, a bathroom and an interconnecting bedroom/sitting room.

All room rates include a delicious cooked Colonsay breakfast.

The Restaurant

Our relaxed and informal restaurant has harbour views, a woodburning stove and white linen tablecloths. In keeping with our easy going style however, you can eat anywhere in The Colonsay that appeals to you.

Lunch is freshly baked bread, soups, casseroles and steak and Colonsay ale pie served with salad leaves that we grow in our kitchen garden, all simple but delicious.

The Colonsay has a children’s menu, all food is freshly cooked, and may range from local fish and hand cut chips, to organic chicken breast and linguine with fresh tomato sauce.

We have a set price two course pre-ferry supper from 5.30pm on Monday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday evenings, which can be enjoyed while waiting for the evening ferry.

"Our philosophy is to source the very best local and Scottish produce and cook it simply. Focusing on Colonsay shellfish, fish, organic salads and vegetables, as well as outstanding Scottish lamb, beef and pork, the menu changes seasonally."

The Bar

Our bar is the hub of island life. Locals, tourists, families and passing yachties all mingle happily in the bar, log room, old dining room and conservatory.

With three roaring log fires, comfy sofas, books and games, there is a relaxed spot for everyone.

On some evenings, instruments are brought out and local Scottish music is the order of the day.

We have our locally brewed Colonsay beer on tap. We also carry a range of bottle conditioned ales and an extensive array of malt whiskies.

We have a carefully thought out wine list that offers great value wines as well as some selected fine wines for those special occasions. To view our wines list, please click here
